The aim of this project is to develop a system able to recognize hand gestures in real-time and to expose the students with the problems related to the design and implementation of real-time video processing systems. Possible applications of hand gesture recognition include control of household appliances and interactive computer games.
The development platform used for this project is a custom computing machine based on Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGA's). FPGA's are particularly suited to the rapid development of real-time signal processing systems as they allow the designer to experiment with several architectures and still provide the performance of Application Specific Integrated Circuits (ASIC).
