The focus on this project is the development of an autonomous robotic navigation system. The project is based on a robot equipped with a camera mounted on a pan-tilt unit(``head'') and a Pentium computer. Wireless control of the robot over limited distances is also possible. The ultimate application of the autonomous robot will be the ability to travel anywhere in the halls. By reading the room numbers next to each door the robot can then find its present position and plan a course of travel to its desired destination.
To begin, the robot will be programmed to travel down a simple, straight section of hallway without any doors or obstacles. Then the ability to find doors, identify room numbers, navigate corners, and generate internal maps of the building will be the subject of additional tasks to be accomplished.
